Since its inception, the NTRCFL has examined the following amounts of digital data:                                 

        2000             2.6 terabytes

        2001             6.3 terabytes

        2002           14.6  terabytes

        2003           23.6 terabytes

        2004           26.8  terabytes

        2005           28.6  terabytes

        2006           44.4  terabytes

A terrabyte is 1000 gigabytes or 1,000,000 megabytes. A megabyte is about 500 typed pages. In 2006, the NTRCFL processed digital evidence that, if printed, would have been a stack of paper over 1376 miles tall.

If all those pages were laid end to end, they would reach around the Earth at the equator just over 152 times, or reach to the Moon and back just over 8 times.

The NTRCFL processed over 50% of the digital evidence involving the aftermath of Sept 11th, 2001. The case was titled, the “PENTTBOM” investigation. It was named after the terrorist attacks against the Pentagon, Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and the crash in Pennsylvania.
